Our investigation of international Jewish communities has focused on Asia. We travel to the “New World”: Recife, northeastern Brazil.
The first Jew in Brazil was Gaspar da Gama, secretary and translator for Portuguese Captain Pedro Cabral, in 1500. Da Gama was forcibly converted to Catholicism, but secretly practiced Judaism. These Jews were called “New Christians” or ”Murranos” (pigs). The proper term is ”Anusim” (coerced).
Anusim Jews found the prosperous sugar plantations in the 1500s. Many intermarried into prestigious Christian families. The Inquisition came in 1593, and many Anusim were returned to Lisbon for public burnings. Anusim Diego Fernandez, husband of renowned Catholic Branca Dias, was accused of keeping an “esnorga,” (secret synagogue).
The first openly Jewish community was established during Dutch occupation in 1630. In 1636, Jews founded the first synagogue in the Americas: Kahal Kadosh Ẓur Israel with 172 members. Zur Israel is on “Rua dos Judeus” (Jewish street), renamed by the Portuguese as Rua da Bom Jesus (Good Jesus St.)
In 1642 Dutch Rabbi Isaac Fonseca arrived to 350 Jewish congregants. By 1639 Jews owned six sugar cane mills. Jews had important roles in commerce, slave trade, agriculture, militia, and medicine. Many Anusim returned to Judaism openly.
In 1645 the Portuguese began a nine year war to regain Recife. Jews joined the Dutch army, many killed in action. In 1654, the Dutch surrendered, and Jews left, founding new Jewish communities in Curacao and New Amsterdam (NYC, NY). Congregation Shearith Israel, 1654, is the first Jewish congregation in North America, founded by twenty-three Recife Jews. Not welcomed by Governor Peter Stuyvesant, Jews fought for their rights in Dutch courts and won permission to remain. (Touro Synagogue, Rhode Island was founded in 1658).
Anusim still lived in Recife. The inquisition into the 1750s, still investigated their clandestine observance of Judaism.
European Jews came to Recife in 1910, forming four synagogues between 1918 -1930. Sadly few accepted the Anusim descendants of the brave pioneers as Jews.
In 2000 Ẓur Israel was restored into a memorial-museum. Jews from the other Recife synagogues celebrate their weddings and B’nei Mitzvot here, and it again functions as a working synagogue after 360 years. In November each year, a Jewish festival offering dance, cinema, and food attracts 20,000 visitors.

“One of the Joys of being a Rabbi,” says Rabbi Arthur Segal,” is working closely with the bride and groom and officiating at their wedding.” He can do this with couples living near by or with couples having a destination wedding in the greater beautiful Hilton Head Island area.
Rabbi Arthur Segal helps develop a custom ceremony with the couple so that each word in the ceremony rings true to them. His ceremonies can range from the very traditional to what ever the couples desires. Rabbi opines that this is the couple’s special day, and to treat each wedding as unique.
For those who are having an interfaith wedding, Rabbi takes special care to respect both traditions, again with total input from the couple. He will be pleased to co-officiate at weddings, using non-Trinitarian language.
Rabbi Arthur Segal also will do recommitment marriage ceremonies with the same care as he does weddings.
Rabbi will work closely with the wedding planer and/or caterer to make sure the wedding is seamless, and the bride and groom can totally enjoy themselves on their special day.
Rabbi Arthur Segal is available, and actually prefers, to be at the rehearsal, to ensure all is going smoothly, and to get to know the bridal party, and family, before the actual wedding day.
For those that wish to have a Ketubah, rabbi will work closely to make sure everyone’s name has correct calligraphy on the document, in English and Hebrew, so the signing ceremony is flawless.

Rabbi Arthur Segal tries to limit his weddings to Hilton Head, SC, Bluffton, SC, Palmetto Bluff, SC, Savannah, GA, and Charleston, SC, but has been known to make himself available elsewhere, even out of the USA. He will also conduct weddings and recommitment ceremonies on cruise ships.
In keeping with Jewish ethics, if the couple resides in Rabbi Arthur Segal’s town, Rabbi will ask, unless there are some special circumstances, if the couple has first asked the local pulpit rabbi to officiate.
